Audio Research Reference CD9 – CD player and DAC in a single chassis
Audio Research continues to move full-speed ahead – the company keeps introducing brand new audio
equipment. The new Reference CD9 CD-DAC has just had its debut during the International CES Trade
Show in Las Vegas. The original construction lets the users listen to their CDs as well as add other digital
sources. The back panel includes four digital inputs (USB 2.0HS, AES/EBU, RCA and Toslink), all able to
handle 24 bit/ 192kHz resolution. Phillips PRO2R transport is responsible for CD playback and the DAC is
benefitting from what the company has learnt in the development of the REF DAC and DSPre. REF CD9
utilizes quad 24-bit DACs running in mono mode, with two separate master oscillators (one for 44.1/88.2/
176.4 sample rates and the other for 48/96/192kHz sample rates). REF CD9’s analog section contains
four 6H30 dual-triode. There are also tubes in the power-supply regulation.
Sonically, the new ARC construction is in a class of its own. Compared to its predecessor – REF CD8 –
acclaim-winning and extremely well-selling – the new CD-DAC offers much greater transient speed and
resolution of inner detail, improved dynamics with much less noise and distortions.
